The Genius Arrived
A company introduced AI. Leadership was excited. Efficiency will improve. Decisions will be faster. We will get ahead of competitors.
How did the floor react?
I heard this from a CEO. In the early days of AI adoption, the frontline response was not rejection. It was quieter than that. Nobody objected. They attended the training. They opened the tools. They just did not use them.
A genius walked into the factory. The factory wished it had not.
The genius is not wrong. The factory is not wrong. The genius’s ability threatens the factory’s order. That is all.
Why the Factory Flinches
The floor does not avoid AI because of incompetence.
What AI proposes often contradicts existing workflows. “This approval step is unnecessary.” “This report can be auto-generated.” “This meeting serves no purpose.”
Correct. But correctness is not the issue.
Being told the right thing means that if you accept it, your job changes.
It is not the change itself that frightens people. It is the uncertainty of whether they still have a place after the change. Tell the person whose entire value was handcrafting reports that “this can be automated,” and you have just erased the only thing that made them matter.
This is not a technology problem. It is an existential one.
Literacy as Absolution
“Let us improve our AI literacy.” A phrase heard in every corporate training program.
The curriculum is predictable. How to write prompts. How to use the tools. How to evaluate outputs. How to handle hallucinations.
All correct. All missing the point.
Training more people to use AI does not increase the number of people willing to change their behavior because of AI.
The word “literacy” has become absolution. “We conducted training.” “We deployed the tools.” “We distributed the manual.” The organization feels it has done its part. The floor continues to ignore AI outputs.
The problem is not “cannot use.” It is “will not use.” That gap does not close with training.
AI Proposes. Humans Ignore
AI does not force decisions. It proposes.
“This process can save three hours a week.” The proposal arrives. The data is sound. The rationale is clear. And nothing changes.
Why? Because executing the proposal requires dismantling an existing process. Dismantling requires authority. Those with authority have no incentive to dismantle. The current process was designed to preserve the current power structure.
The more accurate AI’s proposals become, the more visible the organization’s structural contradictions get.
This is what passive avoidance really looks like. Not rejection. Neglect. Quietly, politely, nothing changes. The training survey says “it was useful.” The following week, the same routines continue.
The Literacy That Is Actually Missing
What is truly lacking is not AI literacy. It is the literacy of change.
What does that mean? The ability to accept that your job will transform. The strength to endure your role being redefined. The willingness to let go of “this is how it has always been.”
This cannot be taught. It is not knowledge transmissible through training. It can only be cultivated through individual resolve and the organizational culture that supports it.
Learning how to use AI takes a day. Changing yourself because of what AI tells you takes a year.
As long as we keep using the word “literacy,” this problem will remain miniaturized within the frame of technical education. And it will never be solved.
Leave the Factory
A factory that resents the genius has only two futures. Expel the genius, or change the factory.
AI cannot be expelled. It has already permeated every industry. So the factory is the one that must change.
But changing the entire factory is beyond what any individual inside it can do. Structure does not bend to personal will.
There is one thing you can do.
Leave the factory.
How long will you stay in a place that resents brilliance? The only one who can answer that question is not a training program. Not AI. It is you.
